Play’n GO has been out these ways before, having designed one or two Ancient Egyptian slots that have really shaken the genre up, Book of Dead being a prime example. As a result, when it comes to looks, sounds, and feels, Tomb of Gold 2 is every bit as visually sumptuous as its predecessor, an already lavishly designed slot. The game has a warm, golden glow about it, throwing a nod to the rich culture that inspired it. Imposing statues line either side of the screen, braziers burn, and the whole thing has been done so well it makes you wonder how out of this world the Ancient Egyptian civilisation must have been in its prime.
Play’n GO has tweaked the volatility dial up a notch, giving Tomb of Gold 2 an 8 out of 10, high rating. The RTP has slightly decreased, however, now maxing out at 96.2%, while lower return models for specific markets are available. The stake range is 10 c to $/€100 per spin, and the gaming takes place on a 6×4 active area where there are 4,096 left-to-right ways to win.
Hitting winning combinations of 6 matching 10-A low pays in Tomb of Gold 2 pays 1-1.4 times the bet, while the ankh, beetle, cat, and mask premiums pay 3-5 times the bet. Wilds are present on every reel, and they substitute for any regular pay symbol. Wild winning ways of six symbols in length pay 6 times the bet.
Tomb of Gold 2: Slot Features
Tomb of Gold 2 revives the previous slot’s Lock’N Gold round, and free spins with rising win multiplier features. It also comes with a new Stack of Gold bonus prize feature.
Stack of Gold
If 5 or fewer Coin symbols land on the reels, they are collected by the Stack of Gold. When 1 or more Coins are collected, the Stack of Gold has a chance of triggering. The stack’s size is completely cosmetic and does not represent the likelihood of the feature triggering. The available bonus prizes it may award are the 20x Mini, 50x Minor, 100x Major, or the 1,000x Grand. Stack of Gold is only available in the base game.
Lock’N Gold
If 4 or 5 Coins land, the reels that do not hold Coins respin. Hitting 6 Coins triggers the Lock’N Gold feature. Initially, 3 respins are granted. Coin symbols may land and stick when they do. Landing a Coin also resets the spin count. At the end of the round, each coin reveals a value of 1x to 10x the bet, and the total amount is awarded. However, covering the entire screen in Coins awards a total of 500x when the feature ends, regardless of the value of Coin symbols.
Free Spins
Hitting 3+ Sphinx scatters triggers the free spins feature. A wheel first spins to determine the number of free spins. Depending on how many scatters triggered the round, players may win 10-30 free spins when triggered by 3 scatters, 15-30 for 4 scatters, 20-30 for 5 scatters, or 25-30 free spins for 6 scatters. The wheel also determines the round’s starting win multiplier of x1 to x5. During the feature, special wild symbols may land, with multipliers of x1, x2, or x3, which adds +1, +2, or +3 to the multiplier counter. The multiplier counter applies to all free spins wins. Players collect an extra spin for every landed Sphinx scatter up to 65.
Tomb of Gold 2: Slot Verdict
Tomb of Gold 2 wasn’t the most mind-blowing sequel. It is basically Tomb of Gold but with a Stacks of Gold jackpot feature rammed on top, alongside a tweak to the wild multiplier symbol rule. Fair enough, they’re changes, but they aren’t drastic enough to turn what was already a fairly average slot into something exceptional. Still, players who enjoyed the first game, and it did use pleasing looks to bring the splendour of ancient Egypt to the screen, should be able to enjoy Tomb of Gold 2 as well, since the new parts add rather than detract from the game.
For another thing, winning potential has risen like a hooded cobra about to strike, which is a move that generally sweetens the sequel deal. Gamblers can now theoretically win up to 10,000x the bet compared to the previous slot’s 7,000x, though the probability of that occurring is the same as in the previous release, with a chance of less than 1 in a billion – so, maybe not. Extra wiggle room is presumably made possible by the way wild symbols can add up to 3 to the free spins win multiplier, compared to the original’s wilds only being able to add +1 each. The new Stack of Gold feature picks up some of the slack, but a top prize of 1,000x is not a monstrous amount.
As mentioned, players who got a kick out of the first game will most likely appreciate Tomb of Gold 2, as well. Its new parts might help it catch the eye of local jackpot enthusiasts, and greater winning potential doesn’t hurt, either. None of the mechanical upgrades are exactly must-sees, though, putting Tomb of Gold 2 on about the same level as its predecessor. Maybe a notch higher.
