Treats of Terror: Slot Overview

Terror, like genuine cold sweat, heart-pumping adrenalised terror, would be a horrific state to experience, but some people enjoy getting a taste of fear via ‘safe’ surrogates such as movies, books, or games. If you’re one of those people, well, maybe give Play’n GO‘s slot Treats of Terror a miss. Despite the name, this is not a scary horror game but one that uses a very light and playful definition of the word ‘terror’, with a dash of humour thrown in as a substitute. On the mechanical side, Treats of Terror is a scatter pays slot (a first from PnG?) with a prize symbol collection feature and multiplier free spins.

It won’t take long, like nanoseconds, to realise that Treats of Terror is not a scary slot. On the contrary, its vaguely Cuphead, Money Jar/Money Jar 2 vibe is geared more for chuckles than inducing terror. Unless perhaps for players with a crippling fear of inanimate objects that have been made to look alive. The setting is a local movie theatre, where a chainsaw-wielding maniac is terrorising food items as they run for cover. It’s all a bit silly, but not in a bad way, while the icing on the not taking itself too seriously cake is an atmospheric 80s horror soundtrack.

Treats of Terror slot – base game

Played on a 5×5 grid matrix, Treats of Terror is a scatter pays slot, meaning 6 or more matching symbols landing in any positions on the reels create a winning combination. The winning symbols are taken off the board and any spaces this makes are filled by symbols dropping downwards and new ones coming in the top. Cascading wins repeat as long as new wins appear after a drop. The RTP value at its highest configuration is 96.2%, while the volatility is high. With a single way to play, gamblers choose a stake of 10 c to $/€100 to let the terror begin.

Treats of Terror’s low pay symbols are like M&M’s with 10-A printed on them, while the high pays are a drink, a hotdog, and a box of popcorn characters. Scatter wins of 6 OAK in size award 0.4x to 2x the bet, going up to 2x to 20x for a 20+ sized scatter win. Treats of Terror does not have wild symbols.

Treats of Terror: Slot Features

Treats of Terror’s feature treats are its Coin and Prize collection extra plus a free spins round that involves 3 stages and multipliers.

Coin and Prize Collection

On any spin, Coin or Prize symbols may appear. If they appear with a Collector symbol, the Collector collects these symbols. If more than one Collector symbol lands, this triggers more than one collect event, meaning each Collector symbol collects the Coin and Prize symbols in view. Coins are worth 1 to 10 times the bet, and prize symbols are the 25x Mini, 100x Minor, 250x Major, and the 1,000x Grand. This feature is available in the base game and in free spins.

Free Spins

Hitting 3, 4 or 5 scatters triggers 8, 13 or 18 free spins with an x2 multiplier, respectively. To advance to the second stage of the free spins round, players must collect 5 scatters in the first stage. Moving to the second stage grants +5 extra free spins, and the multiplier is set to x3. Collecting 5 scatters at the second stage moves play to the third stage, awarding +5 free spins and the multiplier is set to x5.

Treats of Terror: Slot Verdict

In its own little way, Treats of Terror was quite entertaining. Looks and sounds played a big role in the game’s enjoyment, as any possible terror or creep is offset by the wacky anthropomorphic food items on the screen. The villain, in particular, is hard to take seriously despite sporting a chainsaw and hacking things to bits. Perhaps if Treats of Terror used humans instead of food as its characters, the reaction might have been different, but doing so would have changed the game’s entire vibe, which is fine as it is.

Treats of Terror goes light on the features, too. There isn’t a ton of them, for one thing, and the gaming components used aren’t exactly bristling with innovation. It’s a simple case of collecting modest Coin awards with the Collector, or more exciting, collecting Prize values worth up to 1,000x, as well as progressive multiplier free spins. Not exactly original stuff, so like snacking on junk food at the movies, there’s little thought required beyond sitting back and enjoying what’s happening on the screen. The metaphorical movie, in this instance, is a straightforward slasher flick where it’s clear who the goodies and baddies are rather than a puzzling whodunnit that leaves you second-guessing every character till the credits roll. Surprisingly, the game proclaims max win possibilities of 10,000x the bet, which could be said is more of a dream scenario than one that is likely to occur anytime soon.

So, maybe don’t play Treats of Terror if you want to experience a touch of real dread, and maybe don’t play it if you’re in the mood for crazy creative gameplay ideas, either. The presentation is such that it’s not a hard slot to enjoy, for a while. But there’s not a whole lot to the game either, so like finishing off a massive bucket of popcorn, instead of waves of satisfaction, you may just feel bloated and salty.
