King of Sweets: Slot Overview
If there are people who just can’t get enough candy in their lives, then being ruled over by a sovereign called the King of Sweets would probably be pretty, well, sweet. King of Sweets is also the name of a Play’n GO candy game made in the time-honoured tradition of slots that hurt your gums just by looking at them. In an interesting twist, it’s also a reskin of a game that could not be further from sugar, spice, and all things nice. The original in question is the freaky, tentacled, green and purple glowing monstrosity Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity, which has lent practically everything but the skin to King of Sweets.
With a name like King of Sweets, what else can you expect to see on the screen other than a candy-coated paradise for sweet-tooth gamblers? An actual king shows up on the reels as one of the wild symbols, and his castle sits on the right while the foreground is littered with confectionery, cupcakes and the like. As far as candy slots go, King of Sweets’ screen doesn’t utterly ooze sugary items, but make no mistake, this is a saccharine slot that grates on the teeth if you’re not totally on board with the subject matter.
King of Sweets’ gaming area is a 5×5 space, creating winning combinations when at least four matching symbols are connected in horizontal or vertical directions anywhere on the grid. The symbols involved in a winning cluster get taken off the reels, causing symbols to drop down and new ones to come in from the top to replace them. Cascading continues as long as wins keep landing. Mathematically, the game is available in five RTP configurations, 96.2% being the highest, while the math model is medium volatile. When choosing a stake, players may go as low as 10 c or as high as $/€100.
The game’s low pays are four jelly candies, while its high pays are four hard candies. Winning clusters of 4-of-a-kind are worth 0.1 to 2 times the stake, and the bigger 10 or more OAK clusters pay 3 to 100 times the stake.
King of Sweets: Slot Features
For features, King of Sweets has various wild symbols, Sweet Tiles, Sweet-o-meter features, and a Flavoured Frenzy Free Spin.
Wild Symbols
Wild symbols substitute for all pay symbols and come in various forms. Sweet King Wilds may trigger Sweet-o-meter features, while the Multiplier Wild brings x2, x3, x4, or x5 multipliers in the base game or x2, x3, x5, or x10 in free spins. When more than one Multiplier Wild is present in a winning cluster, only the highest multiplier is applied. If such multipliers have an equal value, only one is applied. However, Multiplier Wild and Flavour Unicorn Wild multiplier values are multiplied. The Flavour Unicorn Wild is a 2×2 wild that walks 3 times on the grid.
Sweet Tiles
A golden Sweet Tile may appear in the base game below the symbols. In Flavor Frenzy Free Spins, 12 purple regular and 6 golden special tiles appear. In the base game, a Sweet Tile is ‘stepped on’ by forming a win on its location, awarding 2 to 4 Sweet King Wilds when no more wins are formed. During the Flavour Frenzy Free Spin, winning on all regular purple Sweet Tiles summons the Flavour Unicorn Wild, while winning on 4, 5, or 6 golden Sweet Tiles applies an x2, x3, x4 multiplier to it.
Sweet-O-Meter
All winning symbols and symbols affected by features charge the Sweet-o-meter. The meter triggers modifiers at various stages:
- Jelly Time – 8 charges award 2 to 4 Sweet King Wilds.
- Delicious – 16 charges award 2 to 4 Sweet King Wilds. Winning with these triggers Delicious. Delicious aims at positions 2 symbols away in diagonal directions and positions 3 symbols away in horizontal and vertical directions from winning Sweet King Wilds, destroying symbols in those spots if possible.
- Candy Craze – 30 charges award another 2 to 4 Sweet King Wilds, and winning with these triggers Candy Craze, which upgrades a jelly candy to a hard candy.
- Flavour Frenzy Free Spin – triggered by 48 charges.
Flavour Frenzy Free Spin
When triggered, a Flavoured Frenzy Free Spin takes place with 3 Sweet-o-meter features. The Sweet-o-meter can overcharge, so players get an extra feature for every 4 additional winning symbols up to a maximum of 7. A random Sweet-o-meter feature triggers when no wins are achieved after a cascade until they have all been used. The Flavoured Frenzy Free Spin ends when all Sweet-o-meter features have been played out.
King of Sweets: Slot Verdict
As mentioned, candy is about as far away from summoning Yog-Sothoth as it gets, which might have been a tactic Play’n GO deployed in order to force some distance between these two slots. This definitely works thematically, and those whose interest is not piqued by eldritch horrors might be tempted by a candy-coated version instead. Beneath the outer coating, though, virtually everything else remains the same, from stats and winning potential of 5,000x to gameplay.
As has been stated before, Play’n GO is one of the masters when it comes to making grid slots that collect winning symbols to fill a charge meter to trigger features further down the line. They’ve been doing so for years, from franchises such as the popular Reactoonz range of slots and so on. Tome of Insanity was a fairly good example of this style of play, and so, by extension, is King of Sweets. As often happens, the second time round wasn’t as exciting as the previous slot’s review, and the lessening of thrills was also partly due to the regular candy theme being less intriguing than seeing Rich Wilde wrestle with forces from the other side. From a purely gameplay standpoint, King of Sweets is technically able to get on just as good a roll, hoovering up symbols, hitting the grid with wilds, and tantalising with its one and only free spin when the Flavour Frenzy triggers.
On the not-so-positive side, candy slots aren’t exactly running low on numbers, nor are these charge meter types of games, so there is little to no novelty factor to be had in King of Sweets. It does present the mechanical side of Tome of Insanity in a more lightheartedly cheerful way, however, which some gamblers may prefer to forbidden horror, so there’s likely to be a candy-encrusted niche for King of Sweets to inhabit somewhere.
